SIMON LUTHER BRYANT

   COURTLAND - A funeral service for Simon Luther (Jake) Bryant, 84, was held 
at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Riverside Cemetery by the Revs. Eric Alexie and J. 
Waverly Home.  Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, had charge.

   Pallbearers were: James E. Bryant, Jim Bryant, Ernest Bryant, Clay Bryant, 
Lewis Bryant, Douglas Bryant, S.J. Newbern, Wayne Vick and P.A. Vick Jr.

   Bryant died Monday in a hospital.

   A lifelong resident of Southampton County, he was a retired farmer and a 
member of Vincent Grove United Methodist Church.

   Survivors include a daughter, Gladys B. Newbern of Chesapeake; a 
stepdaughter, Mrs. P.A. Vick Jr. of Franklin; two stepsons, James E. Bryant of 
Zuni and Ernest W. Bryant of Franklin; a grandchild, and a great-grandchild.
