Ray Simmons of the Statesville community, Mrs. Willie Magdalene Bryant, aged 78 years, after an illness of two weeks. Mrs. Bryant was the widow of the late William Edward Bryant of Como, N.C. and the daughter of the late William D. and Amanda Whitley Brett of Hertford County. She was a member of the New Hope Methodist Church, in which she had served faithfully until failing health limited her activities. The deceased is survived by three sons, O.P. Bryant of Hampton and J.E. and E.M. Bryant of Franklin; four daughters, Mrs. J.V. Simmons and Mrs. S. Ray Simmons of Statesville, Mrs. Mary B. Railey of Como, N.C., and Mrs. L.E. Zehrbach of Hampton; two sisters, Mrs. L.W. Brett of Suffolk and Mrs. E.J. Railey of Como; a half-sister, Mrs. J.D. Carter of Franklin; one brother, Douglas Brett of Petersburg; and a half-brother, L.W. Brett of Norfolk; also by eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Bryant were held Sunday afternoon at four o’clock from the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. Ray Simmons, with a former pastor, Rev. F.L. Baker of the Oxford Methodist Church, Suffolk, officiating, assisted by Dr. Orman Bryant of Winchester and Guy Picot of Como, a lifelong friend of the family. Special music was rendered by a quartet composted of Mrs. L.G. Tinnell, Mrs. W.S. McGraw, Donald Spiers, and Rosser Bryant, with a solo by Mrs. Tinnell.
