All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ MARY HARRISON DILLARD BROWNLEY Mrs. Mary Harrison Brownley died last night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.W. Smith, in South Street following an illness of about six months. Mrs. Brownley was before her marriage Miss Mary Harrison Dillard and was born March 18, 1852, at "Englewood" Sussex County, daughter of the late George H. Dillard and Mrs. Eliza Martha Dillard, of an old and prominent family of that county. She was the widow of the late Alexander Marshall Brownley, popularly known as "Governor" Brownley, one of Franklin’s leading citizens in the early history of the town. A native of Mathews County, Virginia, "Governor" Brownley served throughout the War Between the States with gallantry and distinction as a member of Grimes Battery of Portsmouth and moved to Franklin soon after the close of the war. He was twice Mayor of the town and served two terms as Postmaster during the Cleveland administrations. He married Miss Dillard November 11, 1886, and died here in August, 1903. Their children are A. Marshall Brownley and George D. Brownley of Norfolk and Mrs. W.W. Smith of this town, and there are four grandchildren. Mrs. Brownley is also survived by a sister, Mrs. R. Henry Cobb of Suffolk. Mrs. Brownley was a highly esteemed woman numbering many friends. She was a loyal and consistent communicant of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, and funeral services will be conducted from that church tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon at 3 o’clock by the Rector, Rev. J. Sutherland-Watt. The active pallbearers will be G.G. McCann, Barclay Pretlow, J.W.B. Thompson and Dr. E.A. deBordenave, of the church vestry; Robb W. Cobb of Newport News, Frank A. Holladay of Suffolk, T.D. Smith of Farmville and G.G. Smith of Franklin. Burial will follow the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Mary Harrison (DILLARD; Mrs. Alexander M.)
