HENRY COBB, FRANKLIN’S POSTMASTER Mr. R. Henry Cobb, postmaster of Franklin and one of our town’s most honored and highly esteemed citizens, died Sunday afternoon, October 29, at 5 o’clock; after being confined to his home here for several weeks by a paralytic stroke sustained two months ago. Mr. Cobb was in his sixty-fourth year and was the son of the late Leonard Cobb of this county. He came to Franklin about 40 years ago as a clerk for Vaughan and Gay, a firm composed of C.C. Vaughan and J.P. Gay, and later entered the mercantile business for himself. He continued in this business until July 1913 when he was appointed postmaster by President Wilson. In 1884, Mr. Cobb married Miss Lizzie Dillard of Sussex county, who survives him with two children, Robb W. Cobb of Norfolk and Mrs. W.P. Lipscomb of Suffolk. He also leaves two brothers, A.F. Cobb of Ivor and W.R.L. Cobb of Sebrell and three sisters, Mrs. P.F. Brittle of Ivor and Mrs. Watt Vick and Mrs. Hurley Joyner of Sedley. Mr. Cobb was a member of Immanuel Episcopal Church, and one of its most loyal and useful members. He had been senior warden of the vestry since 1899, superintendent of the Sunday school for 17 years and church treasurer 16 years. He was always deeply interested in every phase of the activities of his church and was a strong right arm to the rector and his parishioners. Naturally sociable in temperament, he was active in fraternal orders, being an honored member of Franklin Lodge 151, A.F. and A.M.; Blackwater Lodge 41, I.O.O.F.; Holly Camp No. 18, W.O.W., and the Royal Arcanum. He served as treasurer of the Odd Fellows Lodge for nearly twenty years. He was the son of a gallant Confederate soldier, and treasuring the heritage of his father’s patriotism, was a loyal member of Jefferson Davis Camp, Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was an ardent Democrat and had served his town efficiently as a member of the Council. The funeral was conducted from Immanuel Church Monday afternoon at 4 o’clock where a large assemblage of friends from the town and county had gathered to pay a final tribute of respect to their friend and neighbor. The services were conducted by the rector, Rev. J.F. Coleman of Suffolk. The pallbearers were the vestry, Messrs R.A. Pretlow, J.A. Pretlow, Barclay Pretlow, G.G. McCann, C.W. Darden and Dr. E.A. de Bordenave. The interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery and many fragrant flowers, sent by relatives, friends and organizations to which he belonged, made beautiful his last earthly resting place. The passing of Henry Cobb comes as a personal bereavement to our people who loved him for his staunch, sincere qualities and respected him for his worth. He was true in every relationship of life and our town will long remember him as a faithful Christian, an upright gentleman, a generous friend and worthy citizen.
