He is survived by his wife, Ava G. Cobb, of Franklin, and the following nieces and nephews: Mrs. Grace Boyd and Mrs. Charles E. Johnson, of Portsmouth; Mrs. J.B. Davis, Mrs. Anna G. Davis and Miss Lucille Gillette, of Courtland; Mrs. L.O. Crutchlow and Mrs. T.O. Newsoms, of Emporia; A.B. Cobb and S.N. Cobb, of Courtland; D.C. and T.A. Gillette, of Franklin. Mr. Cobb was a member of Franklin Christian Congregational Church and a Spanish-American War veteran. Funeral services will be held at his residence Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock by Dr. Elwood W. Jones. Burial will be in Franklin Cemetery. ****************************************************************************** MAJOR GILLETTE COBB Major Gillette Cobb, well-known Southampton citizen, died at his home in Franklin, Friday morning, March 13, at 7:30 o’clock. He had been in failing health for three months confining him to his home. Mr. Cobb was born near Sebrell, then known as "Barn Tavern" on December 29, 1863, the son of Daniel C.* Cobb and Mrs. Jane Little Cobb. He lived a quiet and peaceful life, being liked by all who knew him. He was a member of the Christian Church in Franklin for a number of years. Mr. Cobb was a Spanish-American War veteran and a member of the Vaughan- Causey Camp of Suffolk. Only a few members of old Company "I" of Franklin which saw service in the Spanish-American War survive him, some of whom are: George B. Vick of Courtland, T.O. Camp of Ivor, T.M. Caroon of Franklin, C.H. Hayes of Washington and Claudius Councill of Carrsville. In 1900 he was married to Miss Ava G. Cobb. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife, eleven nieces and nephews, a large number of great-nieces and nephews and several great-great nieces and nephews. The funeral services were conducted from his home by Dr. Elwood W. Jones, pastor of the Franklin Christian Church and Rev. R.D. Stephenson, pastor of the Franklin Baptist Church. The choir sang, "God Will Take Care of You" and a trio, "Going Down the Valley" was sung by three of his great nieces: Mrs. J.C. Williams and Mrs. R.N. Nicholson of Capron and Mrs. H. E. Savage of Suffolk. Active pallbearers were nephews and great-nephews: Dan Gillette, Asbury Gillette, Cecil Gillette, Lewis Davis, Garland Davis, S.N. Cobb, A.B. Cobb and Gillette Bryant. The honorary pallbearers were close friends of the deceased.
