Roger W. Cobb, 20 Years Old, Is Seized in James River Sunday Afternoon Roger Wilson Cobb, 20-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. William Emmett Cobb of Franklin, died from a heart attack while in swimming at Camp Waters, Boy Scout Camp on the James River in Surry County, Sunday afternoon at about 1 o’clock. In the water with him at the time were L.E. Britt and B.T. Watkins, Jr., who were visiting for the day at Camp Waters, Roger having gone to visit his brother, Allen Cobb. Roger got into difficulties while swimming and called for help. Young Britt first tried to tow him in, but the other boy became panicky and he had to give up the attempt. Watkins also tried to assist him but he went under. Others by that time had come to the scene and the body was recovered after a few minutes search with grappling hooks and placed on a float near where he went down. Artificial respiration was tried and an inhalator was brought from Hopewell in response to a S.O.S. from the camp. After more than two hours work, efforts at resuscitation were abandoned, rigor mortis having set in. Dr. B.H. Knight, Surry County coroner, who examined the body, pronounced a verdict of death from heart attack, the negligible quantity of water in the boy’s lungs confirming this conclusion. Roger is immediately survived only by his parents and his brother. He was a graduate of Franklin High School and had attended Virginia Tech. He was employed by the Chesapeake-Camp Corporation here, and was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church. Services were conducted from the residence on South Street Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock by his pastor, the Rev. R.D. Stephenson. A quartette composed of Mrs. F.E. Howell, Mrs. J.C. Taylor, E.K. Brinkley, and Joel Cooke Holland sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." Interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery with the following pallbearers: Gilmore Bradshaw, L.E. Britt, B.T. Watkins, Jr., A.H. Gee, Arthur Vaughan, W.W. Dillon, Jr., C.C. Vaughan, 3rd, and Lawless Cobb. Roger Wilson COBB, Chesapeake-Camp Corp. employee, d. 1 Aug 1943, Camp Waters B.S.
