All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WILLIAM MILLS COBB FRANKLIN’S OLDEST CITIZEN DIES AT 93 - "UNCLE DILLIE" COBB William Mills Cobb, 93, retired farmer and lifelong resident of Southampton County, died Sunday morning, January 7, at his home on South Street after a long illness. Known to many friends throughout Southampton as "Uncle Dillie," Cobb spent most of his life operating a farm near Franklin, retiring and moving his home into town in 1919. A son of Jethro and Patsy Vaughan Cobb, he was born May 20, 1851. His wife, Mary Darden Cobb, died in 1936.* Surviving are three sons, J. Henry, W.E. and Linwood Cobb, all of Franklin; three daughters, Mrs. W.O. Cotton, Mrs. Herbert Beaman and Mrs. Herman Howell of Franklin; 15 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at the grave in Poplar Spring Cemetery Monday at 3 p.m. by the Rev. R.D. Stephenson. Pallbearers were: Franklin Edwards, Edgar Weede, Fenton Matthews, Cecil Vaughan, Hunter Darden, William Cobb, Ryland Cobb and Lawless Cobb.
