All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ BETTY THOMAS CABELL CHILD IS KILLED BY SEABOARD TRAIN AT NEWSOMS WEDNESDAY Little Betty Thomas Cabell, 18 months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin W.S. Cabell of Newsoms, was instantly killed Wednesday morning at about 9:50 by a northbound Seaboard Air Line passenger train. The little girl had run away from home and her mother had missed her and was seeking her when the tragedy occurred. The child was reported to have been between the tracks when struck by the train at a spot a quarter of a mile south of the station. Commonwealth’s Attorney Junius W. Pulley and Sheriff T.B. Bell, both of Courtland, investigated the accident, and it is not thought that any further inquest will be made. Besides her parents the child is survived by two brothers, B.W.S. Cabell, Jr. and Stanley Cabell; two grandparents, H.B. Hopkins and P.A. Cabell of Franklin, and a great-grandmother, Mrs. W.B. Hobson of Dunn, N.C. The body was taken to the Purviance Funeral Home at Boykins. Services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock from Newsoms Methodist Church by the pastor, the Rev. F.L. Baker, assisted by the Rev. C.P. Cleveland of Newsoms Baptist Church. Four school children acted as pallbearers, burial taking place in Newsoms Cemetery.
