Cook, 73, a former resident of the Newsoms community, died in a Portsmouth hospital Saturday morning, March 11, after an illness of some months. Mr. Cook was the husband of the late Mrs. Sarah Story Cook and the son of the late William and Roxanna Gray Cook of this county. He was a member of the Newsoms Baptist Church, Newsoms Lodge 113 Woodmen of the World, and the Newsoms Masonic Lodge. He retired from the postal service a few years ago. Surviving him are three daughters, Mrs. Eunice Cook Holloman, Mrs. Louise Cook Bradshaw and Mrs. Blount Cook Cobb, all of Newsoms; three sons, William T. Cook of Whaleyville, Geo. T. Cook* of Newsoms and Benjamin R. Cook of Portsmouth; six sisters, Mrs. Herman Porter, Mrs. Ada Holloman and Mrs. John Worrell of Newsoms, Mrs. J.H. Wright of Carrsville, Mrs. A.R. Baggett of Suffolk, and Mrs. J.C. Britt of Como, N.C.; a brother, William A. Cook, and six grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Funeral services for Mr. Cook were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock in the Holland Funeral Home, Franklin, with Rev. R.L. Chadwick, pastor of the Newsoms Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in the Newsoms cemetery. The pallbearers were Julian L. Carter, E. Beale Carter, R.L. Porter, J.C. Bunn, J.W. Drake, R.A. Bunn, L.L. Porter and Bob Bunn.
