All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ MARY ELIZABETH SMITH COGGSDALE Mrs. Mary Coggsdale, 55, wife of William Coggsdale of Newsoms, died in a Suffolk hospital Thursday, January 23, after a long illness. She was the daughter of the late Shelton and Martha Anne Howell Smith of Southampton County. Besides her husband she is survived by six daughters and four sons, Mrs. Eddie Vick, Miss Catherine Coggsdale and Alvin Coggsdale of Newsoms; Mrs. L.H. Newton of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; W.E. Coggsdale of Murfreesboro, N.C.; Mrs. Annie Oliver, Mrs. Virginia Allen and George Coggsdale of Suffolk; Mrs. Ernest Bryant and Herbert Coggsdale of Norfolk; three sisters, Mrs. Annie Whitley of Murfreesboro, Mrs. G.A. Fowler of Handsom and Mrs. Emma Jane Councill of Gates, N.C.; one brother, James Smith of Portsmouth. Funeral services were conducted from the Newsoms Baptist Church Saturday, January 25, by her pastor, Rev. C.P. Cleveland, assisted by Rev. F.L. Baker. By her request Rev. Mr. Cleveland read John 14:27 as her last message to her children. Also she requested that "Sweet Bye and Bye" be sung at the graveside. At the church the choir sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and "Sometime We’ll Understand." Interment was in Newsoms cemetery, pallbearers being George Bradshaw, Lee Coggsdale, Roy Ferguson, Harry Fowler, Luther Gray, Vernon Whitley, Smith Whitley, John W. Drake. Honorary pallbearers were friends of the family. The casket was covered with a pall of Madonna lilies, pink rose buds, narcissi and ferns. May other beautiful flowers and large crowd of relatives and friends attested the esteem in which Mrs. Coggsdale was held. She had been a consistent and faithful member of Newsoms Baptist Church for many years, also being a member of the Missionary Society and W.C.T.U. Of her we can truly say: "A good mother and wife and kind neighbor has gone to her reward; she made many sacrifices for others.
