ASHLEY PHILIP CUTCHIN PROMINENT FRANKLIN PHYSICIAN SUCCUMBS AFTER MONTH’S ILLNESS Dr. Ashley Philip Cutchin, 79, the oldest practicing physician in Southampton County, died at his home on First Avenue on Saturday morning, November 7, after an illness of four weeks. Born at the ancestral home, "Oak Crest," Isle of Wight County, December 17, 1873, the son of Joseph J. and Jemima Ashburn Cutchin, he was educated at the Franklin Male Academy and was graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in June, 1897. He later continued his studies in medicine at the New York Postgraduate School and Hospital. Dr. Cutchin had practiced medicine in Franklin continuously since October 1, 1897, and was the oldest living member of the Southampton County Medical Society. On October 18, 1948, he was honored by the Medical Society of Virginia when he was presented by that society with a certificate in "recognition of fifty years devoted to the service of the public in the practice of medicine." He had long been recognized by a great host of people of the town and rural areas of this section as a physician who contributed more than generously of his time and talents to the healing of those from whom he could expect to receive no financial remuneration. In boyhood he united with the South Quay Baptist Church but on locating here he transferred his membership to the Franklin Baptist Church, of which he had long been a consistent member. He was a member of the building committee under whose direction and leadership the present sanctuary of the church was erected. He is survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth Frances Story, two sons, Ashley Philip Cutchin, Jr., of Hopewell, Frank Story Cutchin, and a daughter, Mrs. J. Powell Eley, of Franklin, and a sister, Mrs. W.L. Cutchin, also of Franklin. Funeral services were conducted at the residence Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock by the Rev. Ira D. Hudgins, pastor of the Franklin Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. James W. Turner and Rev. J.S. Maxey of the High Street Methodist Church. The active pallbearers were Dr. James P. Broaddus, Ernest L. Cutchin, William H. Cutchin, Joe Bynum Gay, Jr., H.B. McLemore, Jr., Ferrell F. Powell, H.S. Rawlings and George Watkins. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Southampton County Medical Society.
