CUTCHINS, JR. A LEADING CITIZEN OF FRANKLIN, PASSES Franklin and Southampton County lost one of our finest and most useful citizens and public servants Monday in the death of Clifford Armstrong Cutchins, Jr. who passed at his home "Peachblow" in West Franklin after a period of ill health lasting since January, 1939. He was born July 22, 1893, in Nansemond County near Franklin, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius A. Cutchins, and had spent practically all of his life here. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1915 where he was manager of the football team and took a leading part in other campus activities. In 1917, when America entered the World War, he volunteered for service and went overseas with the 80th Division, remaining until after the signing of the Armistice and retired with the rank of First Lieutenant. He maintained a keen interest in the American Legion from its organization; was a past commander of Southampton Post No. 73 and a past chairman of the Second District of the Legion. On June 21, 1921, he married Miss Sarah Penelope Vaughan, daughter of Mrs. C.C. Vaughan, Jr. and the late General Vaughan, who survives him with three children, Clifford, 3rd, Sarah Keith and Katherine Vaughan Cutchins; one brother, Samuel Bernard Cutchins; two sisters, Misses Zula and Frances Cutchins, and a large and prominent family connection. It would be difficult indeed to enumerate the many things in which Clif Cutchins, as he was popularly known, was interested and active. Associated with his father and brother in the firm of C.A. Cutchins & sons for many years, he was managing director of the Hygeia Ice Corporation here since 1926 until its change of ownership last year. He was a director and past president of the Virginia Dairy Products Association; a member of the executive board of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association; a deacon in the Franklin Baptist Church; past president of the Franklin Baptist Church; past president of the Franklin Rotary Club, and president of the Four County Fair during some of the best years of its existence. He was quite active in the political and civic affairs of our county, being Democratic County Chairman for Southampton from 1934 to 1938; was one of the Virginia delegation to the National Democratic Convention in Chicago in 1932, and was appointed by Judge McLemore as Supervisor of Franklin District after the death of J.F. Bryant, Jr. in the fall of 1937, being succeeded by John M. Camp in May, 1939. He was a director in the banking house of Vaughan and Company, while his farming interests were large and varied. A fine, frank, outstanding fellow, genial in his manner and enjoying life to the full, Clif Cutchins left a host of friends as was so abundantly attested by the great crowd at his funeral Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock from the home. Rev. R.D. Stephenson of the Franklin Baptist church and Rev. B.B. Bland of High Street M.E. Church conducting the rites. Mrs. H.M. Purviance, Mrs. P.E.
