Cutchins died at his home in North High street, Franklin, Friday morning, November 30, in his sixty-fourth year. He had been in poor health for two years by reason of a partial stroke of paralysis and sustained a second attack just a few days before his death. Mr. Cutchins was a native of Nansemond County, the son of the late Jack Andrew and Trecy L. Cutchins, the old homestead being where a brother, J. Oliver Cutchins, now resides at Elwood. He was educated at King’s School in Suffolk and at Richmond College and was in the commission business in Norfolk for a few years. Spending about sixteen years in farming near Carrsville, he moved to Franklin in 1903 and engaged in the feed and fuel business, building up a large and important establishment here which was conducted by him until a few months ago when failing health prevented him from taking an active part in its management. He was first married to Miss Lily* Rawls of Isle of Wight County, a sister of the late Dr. Gavin Rawls, who lived only a short time after their marriage. On Thanksgiving Day, 1885, he and Miss Lelia Armstrong of Culpepper** County were wed, his widow now surviving him with five children, Miss Zula Cutchins, C.A. Cutchins, Jr., S.B. Cutchins, Miss Fanny Cutchins and Armstrong Cutchins, all of Franklin. He is also survived by two brothers, Col. Sol. Cutchins of Richmond and J. Oliver Cutchins of Elwood and by one sister, Mrs. J.J. Cutchins of Holland, besides a large and prominent family connection in Franklin, Isle of Wight and Nansemond. Mr. Cutchins was an honest and upright citizen, diligent in business and a devoted husband and father. He was a faithful member of Franklin Baptist Church, and the funeral services were conducted from his late residence Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock by Rev. J.L. McCutcheon, a former pastor of the deceased, assisted by Rev. R.D. Stephenson of the Franklin Baptist Church and Dr. C.H. Rowland of the Franklin Christian Church. Interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the pallbearers being: E.P. Jones, L.B. Norfleet, Dr. W.H. Arthur, J. Powell Eley, D.T. Prince, R.I Beale and Dr. J.C. Rawls. *sic; should read Lillie (see notes below) **sic; should read Culpeper (see notes below) Cornelius Adolphus CUTCHINS (Sr.), Franklin businessman, former farmer, b. 17 Jan 1859, Nansemond Co., d. 30 Nov 1923, at home, Franklin, age 64, interred in Poplar Spring Cemetery (Section 1, Plot 29*), Franklin, 1 Dec 1923, "The Tidewater News" (Franklin, VA), Dec. 7, 1923, p. 1 *Southampton County Historical Society {SCHS} Cemetery Project, Poplar Spring list: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/southampton/cemeteries/poplar1.txt Additional information: 1860 Census - Upper Parish, Nansemond Co., VA (pp. 683-83 {orig.pp. 115-16}; dwl/fam 837; enum. 27 Aug 1860, by Jas.M.
