Body of Drowning Victim is Sought Efforts continued this morning to recover the body of C.T. [sic; T.C.] Cutchins, Jr., 27, of Handsom, who drowned in the Nottaway River near Cypress Bridge Sunday when his outboard motorboat capsized. His companion, Melvin Simms, also of Handsom and of about the same age, swam to safety. Cutchins was pulled under by the current. Sheriff T.B. Bell, of Southampton County, said the river was four or five feet above normal level today and yesterday. The current was unusually strong. Cutchins' father, who lives nearby, was at the scene this morning helping with the dragging operations. The accident was said to have been witnessed by Willie Shaw, who lives a mile from the bridge and who was standing on the bridge at the time. Shaw told Sheriff Bell that Cutchins and Simms had been running the motorboat in and out of a creek emptying into the river above the bridge. Cutchins is survived by a wife and one child. ****************************************************************************** Body of Drowning Victim Recovered FRANKLIN, March 4 - The body of C.T. [sic; T.C.] Cutchins, Jr., 27, of Handsom, has been recovered from the Nottaway River where he drowned Sunday after his outboard motorboat capsized. The body was found within a stone's throw of the place he went down, lodged against a tree near Cypress Bridge. Melvin Simms, who was in the boat with Cutchins at the time of the upset, swam to safety. Cutchins' body was taken to the Holland Funeral Home in Franklin for funeral arrangement. Cutchins is survived by his widow and one child, among other kin. ****************************************************************************** T.C. CUTCHINS, JR. OF HANDSOM DROWNS IN NOTTOWAY RIVER The swollen waters of River the Nottoway on Monday afternoon at about 4:30 o’clock yielded the body of Thomas Councill Cutchins, Jr., 32, of Handsom, who had been drowned nearly 24 hours before. From the various accounts of the accident it appears that Mr. Cutchins, his young brother, Stanley, and his brother-in-law, Melvin Davis of Stony Creek, had been riding in a motorboat on the Nottoway, going upstream from Cypress Bridge as far as Courtland and returning to the bridge. There Stanley announced that he was tired of riding and was put ashore. The others remained in the boat, which was presently overturned in the turbulent flood. Davis managed to swim to the bridge, where he clung to a support; but Cutchins was pulled under by the swift current and disappeared. A searching party was summoned to the scene. But the body of the drowned man was not recovered until the following afternoon, when it was found against a tree some 30 yards from the bridge. Mr. Cutchins, an employee of Camp Manufacturing Company, was the husband of Mrs. Irene Whitehead Cutchins of Handsom and a son of Mr. and Mrs. T.C. Cutchins of Newsoms. He is survived by his wife and parents; his daughter, Linda; seven sisters, Mrs. G.T. Story of Courtland, Mrs. E.E. Drake of Handsom, Mrs. Melvin Davis of Stony Creek, Mrs. Pete Bradshaw of Windsor, and Mrs. Charles Flynn, Mrs. John R. Harrison, Jr., and Mrs. Ivey Lee of Norfolk; and three brothers, Ray L. Cutchins of Franklin, Stanley Cutchins of Newsoms, and Cpl. Marvin E. Cutchins, AUS, stationed Germany. Funeral services were conducted at 2 o’clock on Wednesday afternoon at Mt. Horeb Methodist Church, of which the deceased was member, by Rev. R.B. Moore, pastor of the church. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland, the active pallbearers being Chester Griffin, James Jones, J.C. Joyner, Otis Rainey, Donald E. Rountree, J. C. Story, King Sutherland and C.L. Vick.
