She was Miss Emeline Frances Whitfield and in 1885 married Nelson B. Gardner, whose death took place 10 years later. In 1895 she married Allen H. Cotton, who died in 1900 [sic; 1901]. She united with South Quay Church at the age of 14 years and in 1895 joined Sycamore Church where she was a faithful and consistent member until her death. She was known as "Grandma" to everybody in the whole community and rightly so for she loved everybody and was fond of all children. She is survived by two of her first union, Mrs. J.C. Daughtrey and Mrs. Jimmie Cobb; four grandchildren, Julian and Ethel Harcum, Doris and Lois Daughtrey all of Franklin, and a great number of step-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Bettie Pruden and Mrs. Mary Eley of Carrsville; one brother, William E. Whitfield of Burdette, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at Sycamore Sunday afternoon, Jan. 12 at 3 o’clock by Rev. R.D. Stephenson of Franklin, the choir singing several favorite hymns. The body bearers were: W.T. Harcum, John Vaughan, Marvin Vaughan, Tom Atkins, Pat Cotton, Murray Cotton, Fritze Gardner and Jimmie Gardner. The honorary bearers were friends of the deceased. She was laid to rest in the family plot in the church cemetery. The host of sorrowing friends present bespoke the esteem in which this noble Christian character was held.
