All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WILLIAM KENNETH CLOSE William Kenneth Close, 53, a resident for the past several years of the Courtland community, where he was a bookkeeper for the Leroy Magette Sales and Service, died unexpectedly on Saturday morning, December 29, in the Norfolk General Hospital following an operation. Mr. Close was the husband of Mrs. Mildred Cary Lane Close of Courtland and son of William C. Close of Garden City, Mich., and Mrs. Gertrude Close of Richmond. A brother-in-law of George J. Lane of Franklin, he was a alumnus of William and Mary College, where he twice captained the football team in the early 20's and was a member of Nu chapter of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Besides his wife and parents he is survived by five sons, John Close, AUS, of San Diego, Calif., Robert G. Close, USAF, of Langley Field, David B. Close, USAF, of San Antonio, Tex., and Kenneth and George Close of Courtland; and three daughters, Cary Close, who is with the American occupation personnel in Tokyo, Japan, and Elizabeth and Mary Leigh Close of Courtland. Funeral services for Mr. Close were held at the graveside in the Courtland Cemetery on Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock, with Rev. John M. Gessell, rector of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, officiating, assisted by Rev. L.M. Kanipe, pastor of the Courtland Baptist Church. The pallbearers were Lloyd Applewhite, L.A. Clements, James T. Gillette, Earl Holland, Leroy Magette, Lewis Marks, Herbert Morrison and Dr. E.F. Reese, 3d.
