All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JOSEPH GILLETTE CLAUD Joseph Gillette Claud, 87, died at two o'clock Monday morning at his home near Drewryville. He was a prominent farmer of the Drewryville community. The son of Jesse Cornelius and Madeline Peete Claud, he was born in this county November 14, 1861. Although he had been in failing health for some years, he remained active until very recently, when he became confined to his bed. He was known throughout southeastern Virginia for his public spiritedness. He was twice married, his first wife being Laura Copes Claud, who died in 1935. His second wife, Mrs. Lucy M. Claud, survives him. Other survivors are two sons, Dr. Harry Lee Claud of Washington, D.C., and W.C. Claud of Drewryville; three daughters, Mrs. George A. Powell of Boykins, Mrs. C. Jennings Connelly of Hopewell, and Mrs. R.E. Ball of Raleigh, N.C.; one step-daughter, Inez Garlick of Drewryville; a brother, W.T. Claud of Portsmouth; a sister, Mrs. Jessie Turner of Washington, D.C.; and eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at the residence on Tuesday afternoon at three o'clock by Rev. H.B. Jennings, assisted by Rev. W.L. Sturtevant of Boykins and Rev. Mr. Rose of Emporia. The choir of the Hebron Baptist Church sang "It Is Well with My Soul" and "Jesus Savior Pilot Me." Mrs. H.M. Purviance of Boykins sang "At Eventide." The casket was covered with a pall of calla lilies and red roses. Active pallbearers were E.Q. Murfee, P.R. Ricks, C.D. Cobb, Sr., A.P. Pope, F.E. Pope, J.T. Claud, R.D. Claud and E.M. Trice. Honorary pallbearers were the five senior deacons of the Hebron Baptist Church and friends of the family. Burial was in the Drewryville cemetery.
