All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JOHN WILLIAM CLAUD John William Claud, 66, prominent merchant and civic leader of Drewryville, died in a Suffolk hospital on Friday afternoon, December 28, at 1 o'clock. A member of the Thomas Memorial Baptist Church and of the Drewryville Ruritan Club, he was a director in the Southampton County Bank and a member of the County School Board until ill health forced his retirement. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Katie Thomas Claud; two sons, John T. and Robert D. Claud of Drewryville; a daughter, Mrs. R.E. Stewart, Jr. of Suffolk; eight grandchildren; three brothers. T.P. Claud and J.J. Claud of Drewryville and C.C. Claud of Marion, S.C.; and two sisters, Mrs. H.V. White of Holland and Mrs. J.U. Boykins of Emporia. Funeral services were conducted at the residence on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. H.B. Jennings, his pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev. J.T. Cassell. Jack Drewry sang "The Lord's Prayer". The casket was covered with a pall of lillies, red roses and carnations. Interment was in the Drewryville Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Claud Boykins, Cedric Claud, Corbell Claud, Jimmie Claud, Leslie Claud, Leslie Claud, Jr., Manfeld Claud, William Leigh, L.W. Thomas, Thornton Thomas, Dickie Vaughan and Hugh White, Jr. Friends of the family were honorary pallbearers.
