Joseph Gillette Claud, Jr., 53, a native of Drewryville, died at his home, 512 Westover Avenue, Norfolk, on Sunday morning, February 6, at 5:30 o'clock. He was the son of Joseph G. and the late Laura Copes Claud, and for the past 30 years had been a resident of Norfolk, where he was employed by the mercantile establishment of Ames & Brownley. Mr. Claud was a member of the Freemason Street Baptist Church, Corinthian Lodge No. 266 of the A.F. and A.M., the John Walters Royal Arch Chapter No. 68, the Grice Commandery No. 16 of the Knights Templar, Khedive Temple of A.O.N.M.S., and Norfolk Lodge No. 38 of the B.P.O.E. Surviving in addition to his father are two sons, J. Gillette Claud, 3rd, and Waring W. Claud of Norfolk; two brothers, Dr. H.L. Claud of Washington, D.C., and W.C. Claud of Drewryville; and three sisters, Mrs. George A. Powell of Boykins, Mrs. C.J. Connelly of Hopewell, and Mrs. R.E. Ball of Raleigh, N.C. Funeral services for Mr. Claud were conducted at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home in Norfolk at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning by Dr. Sparks W. Melton, pastor of the Freemason Street Baptist Church. Interment was in the cemetery at Drewryville at 2 p.m. the services being conducted by Dr. Melton, assisted by Rev. H.B. Jennings, pastor of the Drewryville Baptist Church. The choir sang a favorite hymn of the deceased, "Lead Kindly Light." Corinthian Lodge No. 266, A.F. and A.M., attended in a body and presented the full Masonic ritual of commitment. The pallbearers were E.Q. Murfee, Edward M. Trice and John T. Claud of Drewryville, and Norman Adams, H.H. Williams, A.J. Odell, J.J. Barnes and Joseph Hodges of Norfolk.
