Gillette Claud. Mrs. Claud had been in failing health for several months. Mrs. Claud was born Laura Virginia Copes of the Eastern Shore of Virginia and had been married to Mr. Claud for 45 years. For 40 years she had been a constant attendant and active worker in the old Persons M.E. Church and her loyal devotion and unselfish service to that congregation is a beautiful tribute to her beautiful character. Hers was indeed a life of devoted service not only to her church and her family but to her friends and the community in general. The funeral was held from her home Thursday afternoon, September 26, with interment in the Drewryville cemetery amid a bower of flowers and the sorrowing hearts of a large concourse of friends. The active pallbearers were: George Turner, Amos Pope, John Claud, Vernie Leigh, Tom Payne Claud and Sam Johnson. The honorary bearers included a large number of friends. She is survived by her husband, J.G. Claud; two sisters, Mrs. W.C. Cooper, Greensboro, N.C., and Mrs. Margaret Elliott of Kinston, N.C. and the following children, Mrs. George Powell, of Boykins, Mrs. R.E. Ball of Raleigh, Mrs. E.J. Connelly of Hopewell, W.C.
