News has been received here of the death at Gilmore, in Norfolk county, of Rev. M.S. Colonna, Sr., a widely known and beloved minister. He was the brother-in-law of Mrs. W.T. Christian, of Barton Heights. Rev. Major Samuel COLONNA, Sr., Methodist pastor, Confederate chaplain, b. 1833*, Southampton Co., d. 18 Aug 1904, at home, Gilmore, Norfolk Co., interred in Poplar Spring Cemetery (Section 1, Plot 38A*), Franklin, "Times-Dispatch" (Richmond, VA), Vol. 1904, No. 16622, Aug. 20, 1904, p. 3, col. 4 An obit also appeared in "The Norfolk Virginian," Aug. 19, 1904 *Additional information: Southampton County Historical Society {SCHS} Cemetery Project, Poplar Spring list: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/southampton/cemeteries/poplar1.txt His gravestone is wrong, showing 6 Jun 1833 - 18 Aug 1905. (Find a Grave Mem. #19003399) It is also suggested that he was b. 17 Jun or 15 Jul 1833. The 1900 Census (Newport Dist., IoW.Co.) gives b. Jun 1835. His son Rev. Major Samuel COLONNA, Jr. (6 Jun 1871 - 18 Oct 1937) is buried in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Newport News. (Find a Grave Mem. #88645013) His son William H. COLONNA (10 Feb 1897 - 6 Sep 1977) is buried in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News.
