BOYKINS - A funeral service for Henry Gordon Coleman Jr., 80 of Boykins, was held Saturday, August 12, at 3 p.m., at the Boykins Baptist Church by the Rev. James T. Campbell and the Rev. William Hudson. Burial was in the Beechwood Cemetery in Boykins, with McDowell Funeral Home, Boykins, in charge arrangements. Active pallbearers were Maj. Robert Faizer, Reese Anderson, Ray E. Foster, Frank W. Gearing III, Madison B. Drewry, W. Hugh Powell and M. Sasek. Coleman died Thursday morning, August 10, at Southampton Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness. A native of Granville County, N.C, he was the husband of Mrs. Frances White Coleman, and a son of Henry G. and Mrs. Ina J. Wilkerson Coleman (before her death in 1960 he was married to Mrs. Edna Earle Powell Coleman). He lived in the Boykins area for the past 61 years. He was a salesman for the Frank Tea and Spice Co. and Harwell Brothers & Gibbs Brokerage Co. of Petersburg. He was also formerly an agent with the Seaboard Airline Railroad. He was a past chairman of the board of deacons of the Boykins Baptist Church and had been superintendent and a teacher of its Sunday school for many years. He was also a past master of the Boykins Masonic Lodge #287, and a member of the Traveler’s Protective Assn. Besides his widow, surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Frank W. Gearing Jr. of Harrisonburg; a son, Malcolm P. Coleman of Boykins; two brothers, Charles W. Coleman of Ft. Layderdale, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Charles B. Todd of Montgomery, Ala.; and Mrs. Margaret L. Coleman of Durham, N.C.; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
