All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ MARY SHEPARD COLLIER A funeral service for Mary Shepard Collier, 13, who was killed Wednesday when the car in which she was riding collided with a tractor-trailer on U.S. 58 half a mile west of Franklin, was conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in W.J.M. Holland & Sons Funeral Home by the Rev. Darden Battle and the Rev. Thomas Mabe. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Pallbearers were Aubrey Lankford, Calvin Burgess, Franklin Whitfield, Larry Powers, Sam Purviance, Barham Dodson, Randolph Denson and Lee Walkers. Dorothy Ione Campbell of Route 3, Franklin, 16, was listed in satisfactory conduction in Southampton Memorial Hospital with head injuries. State Police investigating the accident said the car, driven by Miss Campbell, was crossing U.S. 58, heading south from Va. 688, when it was struck broadside by the truck, which was headed east on U.S. 58. Police said the tractor-trailer was driven by James E. Jones, 30, of Route 2, Stony Creek. No charges had been placed Wednesday night. Miss Collier, a native of Franklin, was a daughter of William A. and Mrs. Brownie Johnson Collier. She was a senior choir member of Sycamore Baptist Church. She was in the eighth grade at Franklin High School and a member of the school band. She was a member of Windsor Chapter of Sing-Out America, and Cadet Troop 756 of Girl Scouts. Besides her parents, she is survived by a brother, Joseph Howell Collier of the home.
