CAMP, JR., FORMER PRESIDENT OF UNION CAMP CORP. FRANKLIN - James Leonidas Camp, Jr. 87, former president and chairman of the board of Union Camp Corporation, died Sunday at his home, Wyndie Crest, after a brief illness. A native of Franklin, the son of the late James Leonidas Camp Sr. and the late Carrie Fountain Savage Camp, he was the husband of Alma Truitt Camp; his first wife Mary Frances Clay Camp had died in 1969. Camp, a noted philanthropist, also had been chairman of the board and president of Camp Manufacturing co., before its merger with Union Bag & Paper Corp. and had been a director of National Lumber Manufacturers Association, American Forest Products Inc. and National Association of Manufacturers. He was a trustee and former president of Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges and president of Camp Foundation and his own J.L. Camp Foundation. He also was a trustee of Virginia Baptist Children's Home, University of Richmond, University of Virginia Graduate School of Business Administration, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and Crozier Theological Seminary. In 1961 he received the distinguished service award of Virginia's First Citizen from the state Chamber of Commerce and had received a similar award from the Franklin Business and Professional Women's Club in 1955. He was a member of the Newcomers Society of North America, the English Speaking Union and several clubs in New York, Virginia and Florida. He was for many years a deacon in Franklin Baptist Church and organized the group that founded Southampton Memorial Hospital in 1963. He strongly backed the development of Franklin's Young Men's Christian Association. He was a graduate of Wake Forest College, where he played varsity football, and died graduate work at Columbia University, where he studied voice under Frank Croston. While he abandoned an intended career as a concert and an operatic singer when he entered business, for many years he continued to perform as a baritone soloist. He was a member of the Naval Reserve Flying Corps during World War II. Other survivors include a son, Fr. James L. Camp,III, and two grandsons, James L. Camp IV and Christopher P. Camp, of Charlottesville, and a sister, Mrs. W. Eldridge Smith of Franklin. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Poplar Spring Cemetery by Dr. Ira D. Hudgins. Wright Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
