CAMP DEAD AT 83 FRANKLIN, Va. (AP) - Paul Ryland Camp, 83, former director and general manager of Camp Manufacturing Co.’s extensive woodland property, died Saturday night in Southampton Memorial Hospital after illness of several months. Born in Como, Hertford County, N.C., he lived in Franklin since childhood. His father was the founder of Camp Manufacturing Co., now Union-Bag Corp. It was with this company and associate industry that Camp was principally engaged as director and general manager of its extensive woodlands in Virginia and North Carolina. He resigned as director of Camp Manufacturing Co. in 1940. He continued to live in Franklin and gave his attention to real estate and investments. Besides his widow, Mrs. Ella Virginia Cobb Camp, surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Merrill O. Young of Boston, a brother, five sisters and five grandchildren. ****************************************************************************** PAUL RYLAND CAMP FRANKLIN - Funeral services for Paul Ryland Camp, son of one of the founders of Camp Manufacturing Co., (now Union Camp Corp.) and a former director and general manager of the company's extensive woodland prosperities, were held Tuesday at the Franklin Baptist Church. The services were conducted for the 83-year-old industrialist by Dr. Ira D. Hudgins, pastor of Franklin Baptist Church. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Pallbearers were John M. Camp Jr., Paul Camp Marks, Robert F. Marks Jr., P.D. Camp III, Clifford A. Cutchins III, Charles R. Younts, J. Edward Moyler Sr., and W.M. Camp Jr. Camp died Saturday night in Southampton Memorial Hospital after an illness of several months. Born in Como, N.C., he lived in Franklin most of his life. He was the husband of Mrs. Lila Overstreet Camp and a son of Paul Douglas and Mrs. Ella Virginia Cobb Camp of Southampton County. He resigned as director of Camp Manufacturing Co. in 1940. He continued to live in Franklin and gave his attention to real estate and investments. He was a member of Franklin Baptist Church, Bruner Bible Class, a former deacon and trustee. In his earlier days, he was trustee of Sycamore Baptist Church, which was founded by his father. He was a 1904 graduate of Virginia Military Institute and took his master of arts degree from the University of Virginia in 1907, and also attended the University Law School. He was a leader of the Camp P.D. Hunting Lodge, also founded by his father, used for generations by neighbors and outdoorsmen from all parts of the country. The lodge, known as The Big Woods, is in the Como area of Hertford County, N.C. He had been active in Franklin Young Men's Business Association, was a longtime director of American Forestry Association, director of Virginia National Bank, and a member of Franklin Rotary Club. He also was general manager of the Roanoke Railroad, a short-haul line used by the Camp company in moving timber from North Carolina to Franklin. He was in lumber procurement service for the U.S. Government during World War I and retired as a major. Besides his widow, surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Merrill O. Young of Boston; a brother, Dr. Paul D. Camp Jr. of Richmond; five sisters, Mrs. Webster Upsom Walker of Bridgeport, Conn., Mrs. William Marion Ballard and Mrs. William Henry Murphy Campbell of Franklin, Mrs. Charles Rolfe Younts of Atlanta, and Mrs. Robert Franklin Marks of Boykins; and five grandchildren.
