CAMP, WELL-KNOWN IVOR CITIZEN, STRUCK BY HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER Well-Known Farmer Sustains Critical Injuries While Walking on Highway Theon O. Camp, well-known Ivor citizen, lies critically ill in Lakeview Hospital, Suffolk, as the result of grave injuries sustained last Saturday night when he was struck by a hit and run driver and left unconscious beside the highway. Mr. Camp, who is about 67 years of age, lives two miles South of Ivor on the Courtland-Ivor Highway. Saturday night about 7 o'clock, he was walking into Ivor from his home when he was struck. He was found later in an unconscious condition by a passing Negro who gave the alarm in Ivor, Leroy R. Bracey of that town driving at once to the scene of the accident and bringing Mr. Camp to Dr. E.M. Babb in Ivor. After rendering first-aid, Dr. Babb sent him to Lakeview Hospital, and it is understood that Mr. Camp has been conscious only momentarily since he was hurt. He injuries consist of a fractured skull and a badly crushed right arm, grave fears being felt for his recovery. Mr. Camp is an upright and honorable citizen and one of the few Spanish-American War veterans in this county. Mrs. Camp died about one year ago and he has only one child, J. Winston Camp of Ivor. There are no clues as to the identity of the person of persons who hit him. ****************************************************************************** Suffolk, Dec. 19 - Funeral services for Theon O. Camp, who died on injuries inflicted when he was stuck by a hit and run driver on the Suffolk-Windsor highway near Ivor, were conducted Sunday afternoon at the home, near Ivor, by the Rev. George Kissenger. Burial was in the family cemetery. A large delegation of Spanish-American War Veterans attended and the casket was covered with a flag. At the grave the semi-military burial service was conducted by members of Austin R. Davis Camp of Portsmouth and the Vaughan- Causey Camp of Suffolk, with District Commander J.T. Bannister and District Chaplain E.H. Lader in charge. Honorary pallbearers were members of the two camps. There were many floral tributes. ****************************************************************************** IVOR VICTIM OF HIT-RUN BURIED Theon O. Camp, well known resident of Ivor who was struck down by a hit and run driver last Saturday night near his home died Saturday night at 8:10 at Lakeview hospital where he was rushed immediately after the accident. Mr. Camp was 67 years old. Surviving him are one son, J. Winston Camp and a grandson, J. Winston Camp, Jr., both of Ivor; one brother John G. Camp of Burdette, Va., two sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Councill of Burdette, Va., and Mrs. Sallie C. Bradshaw of Boykins; one niece Miss Mary Edith Gardner and one grand niece little Betty Sue Gardner. Mr. Camp, a prominent resident of Ivor community was a member of the Millfield Baptist Church, a Spanish American War Veteran and a member of the Vaughan Causey Camp United Spanish War Veterans. The body was taken to the Holland Funeral Home in Franklin where it will remain until tomorrow when it will be taken to the residence at Ivor where funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 o'clock. The Vaughan Causey Camp Spanish War Veterans presented a flag which draped the casket and attended the services in a body. Mr. Camp was preceded to the grave by his wife in September of 1937. ****************************************************************************** HIGHWAY ACCIDENT FATAL TO T.O. CAMP Theon O. Camp, prominent Ivor citizen who was struck by a hit-and-run driver on the highway near Ivor Saturday night, December 10, succumbed to multiple injuries at Lakeview Hospital, Suffolk, last Friday night. Rites for Mr. Camp, who was 67, were conducted from the home near Ivor last Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by the Rev. E.B. Cohoon, assisted by the Rev. George M. Kissinger, his pastor, the hymns "Have Thine Own Way, Lord" and "Nearer, Still Nearer" being sung. A large number of Spanish-American War veterans attended the services, Mr. Camp having enlisted in Company 1, Franklin, and being an active member of Vaughan-Causey Camp, Spanish-American War Veterans, of Suffolk. A semi- military service was conducted at the grave, the casket being covered with a flag. Members of the Austin R. Davis Camp of Portsmouth and the Vaughan- Causey Camp participated in the final rites, with District Commander J.T. Bannister and District Chaplain E.H. Lader in charge. Interment was made in the Boykins family cemetery at Ivor, pallbearers being H.A. Vaughan, H.S. Saunders, O.W. Branch, A.R. Gardner, L.A. Brantley, C.A. Sadley, L.H. Boothe and W.T. Johnson. Members of the two veterans camps were honorary pallbearers. Mr. Camp was the son of the late Junius W. Camp and Mary E. Davis Camp of the Black Creek community. He married Miss Nannie May Wilkinson of Ivor on Christmas Day, 1905. He was a member of Black Creek Baptist Church in early life, later transferring membership to Millfield Baptist Church near his home. He is survived by a son, J. Winston Camp; a grandson, J. Winston Camp, Jr.; two sisters, Mrs. Sallie C. Bradshaw of Boykins and Mrs. E.A. Councill of Burdette, and a brother, J.J. Camp of Burdette.
