She was the widow of the late Robert C. Campbell and the daughter of the late Zephia [sic; Zephaniah] and Mary Downs Brown, of Hertford County, N.C. She was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church and a teacher there for many years. She was also active in the Woman's Missionary Society. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Lyle Smith, of Franklin; Mrs. Ashby Blythe, of Franklin; Mrs. Charles Scarborough, of Richmond and Mrs. James B. Davis, of Lekin, Kans.; three sons, Fred Campbell, of Richmond, Thomas Campbell, of Keystone Heights, Fla., and James S. Campbell, of Franklin; 10 grandchildren; one half-sister, Mrs. Mary Baker, of Portsmouth, and a half- brother, Grover Vann, of Hampton. ****************************************************************************** ZEPHIA BROWN CAMPBELL Mrs. Robert Courtney Campbell, prominent citizen and churchwoman of our town, died Monday night, October 11, after a brief illness in her 73rd year. She was a native of Hertford County, N.C., and had made her home here since 1907, when the family moved from Norfolk to Franklin. In the year her husband founded the Campbell Grocery Company, a wholesale business which he operated successfully until his death on October 1, 1931. Mrs. Campbell had led an unusually full and active Christian life. She was the daughter of the late Zephaniah Brown and Mrs. Deborah Downs Brown of Hertford County. A member of the Franklin Baptist Church, she was for many years teacher of the King’s Servants Bible class, leader in the Helen Henderson circle of the Woman’s Missionary Society, and president of the Woman’s Missionary Society. She was a graduate of Chowan College. Surviving her are four daughters, Mrs. Lyle Smith and Mrs. Ashby Blythe of Franklin, Mrs. Charles Scarborough of Richmond, and Mrs. James B. Davis of Lakin, Kans.; three sons, Fred Campbell of Richmond, Thomas Campbell of Keystone Heights, Fla., and James S. Campbell of Franklin; ten grandchildren; one half-sister, Mrs. Mary Baker of Portsmouth; and two half-brothers, Jack Vann of Ahoskie, N.C., and Grover Vann of Hampton. Funeral services for Mrs. Campbell were held Thursday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock from the Franklin Baptist Church, and were conducted by Rev. R.D. Stephenson, a former pastor, assisted by Rev. Randolph L. Gregory. Burial was in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery.
