CHAMPION Ralph Waldo Champion, 61, a former resident of Courtland, died Sunday afternoon, November 10, in the Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie, N.C. after an illness of several months. Mr. Champion was a retired salesman, but for the past six years had operated a farm near Como, N.C. He was the husband of Mrs. Helen Simonson Champion of Como, and a son of the late James I. and Mrs. Flora Strother Champion of Granville County, N.C. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, James Champion of Como; a brother, J.V. Champion of Norfolk, and a sister Mrs. Hattie Allred of Raleigh, N.C. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Home by Rev. W.Gibson, pastor of the Courtland Methodist Church and Rev. O.L. Gochenour, pastor of the Barnes Methodist Church near Newsoms. Burial was in Newsoms Cemetery. Pallbearers were Martin Cobb, Hugh Barrett, Sr.; R.N. Darden, Jr., J.T. Story, Jr. H.B. McLemore, Jr., and L.M. Manry.
