Councill of the Franklin community, died June 16, in the 77th year of her life. Funeral services were held from the home Monday afternoon, June 17, in the presence of a large company of relatives and friends, by the Rev. Jesse Stanfield of Corinth. Two of her favorite hymns were used, Mrs. H.G. Cobb singing "In the Garden," and Mrs. W.S. Urquhart and Mr. Stanfield sang "Shall We Gather at the River?" The body bearers were: E.L. Beale, C.H. Hayes, M.C. Blythe, W.A. Joyner, J.H. Scott, W.W. Winslow, E.N. White and George Cox. The honorary pallbearers were selected from a large group of friends of the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery here amid a profusion of lovely flowers. The following tribute to the life and worth of Mrs. Councill has been given us by a friend of many years’ acquaintance. Martha Elizabeth Scott was born at Corapeake, N.C., June 3, 1852. Living in her girlhood among Methodist friends, she naturally expressed her Christian faith by joining the Methodist Church. Frequent visits to relatives in Virginia resulted in her meeting James Jordan Councill, to whom she was married December 31, 1879*. Six children were born of this union, Joseph T. Councill, Mrs. Viola H. Drake, Robert J. Councill, Mrs. Burnetta P. Rountree, James Paul [Councill, and Mrs. Pauline C.] Cox, all of whom, with her husband and 17 grandchildren, survive her. The life of Mrs. Mattie Councill had been one of faithful service. In her home the duties of wife and mother filled her busy days for fifty years. But numerous as were her household duties, and ministrations to her own family, she found time for many acts of neighborly kindness. Her visits and timely gifts were a source of comfort to sick neighbors. Early in her married life she joined the Society of Friends, and in 1925 was made in Elder of Bethel meeting. Hers was a willing and cheerful service in all the lines of church activity in which she could participate. She was thoughtful and painstaking in her work for the guild. The care that she showed in making garments for local or foreign need, and the readiness with which she contributed for special occasions, showed a sincere interest in the work of the meeting. Behind her loving service in her home, her community and her church, she had a sustaining faith in Christ which prompted and sweetened her service. In private conversation she sometimes spoke of this faith. It was her chief desire, as she said, to be true to the Blessed Savior. After several years of failing health and a short period of acute illness, she finished her life of service June 16, 1929, aged 77 years. Martha Elizabeth "Mattie" (SCOTT; Mrs. James J.)
