Councill of West Franklin, was killed Saturday afternoon, October 11, by an automobile driven by Lloyd Brown, young white farmer living on the Courtland- Ivor road on the old Willis Ricks farm. The accident occurred about five o’clock when the little girl was struck by Brown’s car almost immediately in front of her father’s service station. After striking the child, the automobile was said to have ploughed its way at least 300 feet through the field to the right of the highway the car coming toward Franklin at the time. B.V. Hargrave, a neighbor of the Councill’s immediately brought the injured child to Raiford Hospital here when it died four hours later. Everything possible was done at the hospital, and Dr. Jacobson came from Petersburg in an hour’s time to render assistance, but medical help availed nothing. Nothing has happened in our town or county more appalling or distressing, and the universal sympathy of our people has gone out to the bereaved parents and other members of the family. The child was unusually sweet and attractive in her personality and was quite a favorite in the town and community. The tragic nature of her going leaves an unanswered and unanswerable question in all minds- one can only commend the sorrowing ones to a greater Comforter than even the kindest and most intimate friends and neighbors can be as they have striven to speak words of consolation. Shirley is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Council; an older sister, Dorothy, and an infant brother, R.C. Councill, Jr., besides her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Howell, and other relatives. Funeral services were held from the home Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock in the presence of a large assembly of friends. Rev. Jos. W. Fix of the Franklin Christian Church conducted the rites, assisted by Rev. Dr. Geo. H. Spooner of the High Street M.E. Church. Hymns sung were " Little Jewels," "Safe in the Arms of Jesus," and "When He Cometh," by J. Edgar Weede, E.P. Jones, Mrs. E.P. Jones, Mrs. H.G. Cobb, Mrs. L.B. Norfleet and Mrs. W. A. Daughtrey. The body bearers were young friends of the little girl’s: H.G. Councill, Jr., William Sheffield of Suffolk, William Howell, Herbert Cobb, Jr, Vaughan Beale and Jordan Rountree, and interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery where a profusion of beautiful floral tributes covered the tiny mound and burial plot. A friend of Shirley’s who knew her well and saw her daily, asks that the following personal tribute be included in this account of her going away. "She was endeared to those who knew her intimately for her exceptionally sweet and lovable disposition. The picture of sunshine and beauty as she was, in her dainty, fairy-like attractiveness, she was possessed with even a more beautiful and a most affectionate nature. Like a golden butterfly, she attracted everyone as she moved about and was undoubtedly one of the most loved children of the entire community. In her home where she lived constantly in a radiant bloom of cheer and sweet companionship, she was held especially dear by her loved ones. So often she talked of angels and now that she had gone from us to be with them, we can but think of her as being really, the little angel she so resembled while here." "While our hearts feel deeply the tragic blow which has befallen and which means our separation from one so dear, we can only submit to the will of Him who doeth all things will. Although prone to question the motive for the affliction which so grieves us, we do have the assurance of her being. "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." With her there we should be, and are, happy to know that while we miss her soft footsteps and tender smile, she is infinitely more at rest and is awaiting us whom she loved, with beautiful, beckoning hands."
