All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JOSEPH HENRY CHANNING Joseph Henry Channing, 76, of Newsoms, died Tuesday morning, December 11, at his home after an illness of several months. He was the son of the late James B. and Evelyn Nicholson Channing of Northampton County, N.C. Mr. Channing was a well-known merchant and peanut buyer for many years and is known throughout Tidewater Virginia and Eastern Carolina. He was a member of the Newsoms Methodist Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Louise Darden Channing, Newsoms and a nephew, Dr. Charles Edward Channing of Washington, who made his home with him for many years, and several other nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the grave Thursday at 2 p.m., conducted by the Rev. W.J. Morrison, assisted by the Rev. R.C. Wells. Burial was in Newsoms Cemetery. Pallbearers were: William L. Darden, John B. Darden, Jr., Harvey Picot, Carr Picot, Hugh Picot, Rufus E. Darden, Julian L. Carter and Rosser Bryant. ****************************************************************************** JOSEPH HENRY CHANNING Joseph Henry Channing, born April 10, 1869, in Northampton County, N.C., the son of the late James Boykin and Mrs. Evelyn Nicholson Channing, died December 11 after a lingering illness of several months. He was married to Miss Louise Darden of Newsoms and they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in April 1945. Spending the greater part of his life in Newsoms, he was a well-known peanut buyer there for many years. A member of the Newsoms M.E. Church he was Supt. of its Sunday school for nine years, and had served on the Newsoms District School Board. Burial services were conducted at the grave December by the Rev. John W. Morrison of the Newsoms Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. R.D. Wells, burial being made in the Newsoms Cemetery.
