CRICHTON, LEADING FARMER AND CITIZEN OF CAPRON, DIES SATURDAY Edward Winfield Crichton died at his home near Capron Saturday morning, July 7, after an illness of many months. Mr. Crichton, who was 75 years of age, was a leading farmer and citizen of the Capron community. He had served his district and county acceptably as a member of the Board of Supervisors from 1916 to 1920 and was an active, public-spirited citizen, always interested in everything conducive to the highest welfare of his county and its people. He was a successful and progressive farmer and had always manifested a keen interest in improved methods of farming and in the development of agriculture as practiced on his own farm. For a number of years he had been Vice President of the Bank of Capron; was one of the leading members of Applewhite M.E. Church where he taught in its Sunday school, and was affiliated with Courtland Lodge No. 85, A.F. & A.M. He was the son of the late Dr. James Crichton and Mrs. Margaret Ann Elizabeth Crichton of Brunswick and Southampton counties. Besides his wife, Mrs. Rena Joyner Crichton, he leaves four sons, F.B. and Edwards Jr., of Capron, Winfield and Leroy of Pennsylvania; four daughters, Mrs. W.A. Hawks of Carson, Mrs. W.H. Holmes, Misses Margaret and Florence Crichton of Capron, and several grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted from his late residence Sunday afternoon at 5 o’clock by his Pastor, Rev. R.H. Marks of Capron, and burial was made in the Capron Cemetery. A quartette from Stoney Creek, Mr. and Mrs. P.E. Freeman, Miss Janet Freeman and I.A. Prince, sang a number of favorite hymns during the service, and the active pallbearers were: V.A. Pittman, J. Elwood Fox, C.B. Harding, H.L. Bain, W.H. Story, R.S. Nicholson, W.B. Simmons and J.D. Vick, a large number of honorary bearers being selected from friends of the family. The casket was covered with a pall of Easter lilies and sweetpeas. His father's birthplace is given as Brunswick, but there is a tiny scrawl above -wick, transcribed as "Germany" at FamilySearch.org. Dr. James E. CREIGHTON died 23 Dec 1864 in Southampton Co. (Southampton Co. D.Recs. {recopied}, p. 156 [orig.p. 1 #39]) The family ("Crayton") appears in the 1880 Census in Boykins Dist. (#102), Southampton Co. E.W., his 3 sister's & their mother- and the father & mother of each- are all given as b. Va.
