ANNA VRIES CARTER

   NEWSOMS - Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Vries Carter, 78, were held 
Saturday in Hollywood cemetery, Newsoms, by the Revs. Arthur Green, Kenneth 
Williams and Harry Bunch.  McDowell Funeral Home had charge.

   Pallbearers were: S.C. Worrell Jr., Shirley E. Culpeper, Raymond E. Drake, 
Eppa B. Prince, Braxton Bunn, Charles B. Bunn, Milton F. Vick, Allen 
Applewhite, Sammy Vick.

   Carter died Friday in Southampton Memorial Hospital.

   A native of Rotterdam Netherlands, she lived here most of her life.  She 
taught school for 40 years at Newsoms Elementary and was its principal from 
1945 until 1969.

   She was a member of Newsoms United Methodist Church and taught the ladies 
Bible class for 40 years.  She was a charter member of Newsoms club and a 
director of Walter Cecil Rawls Library.

   She was an organizer and former director of Southampton Academy.  She 
attended Virginia State Norman School which is now Longwood College.

   Survivors include her husband, E. Beale Carter of Newsoms; two sons, E. 
Beale Carter Jr. of Newsoms and Stuart Vries Carter of Wilmington, N.C.; and 
five grandchildren.
