ETHELDRED BEALE CARTER

   NEWSOMS - A funeral service for Etheldred Beale Carter, 89, was held 
Saturday at 2 p.m. in Hollywood Cemetery by the Revs. Harry Bunch and Kenneth 
Williams.  McDowell Funeral Home, Boykins, had charge.
   Carter died Thursday in a hospital.
   A native of Southampton County, he was the husband of the late Anna Vries 
Carter.  He was the first mayor of Newsoms, serving for 26 years, and was a 
retired agricultural products merchant.  He was an Army veteran of World War I 
and a former member of the Southampton Memorial Hospital board, a charter 
[member of] Newsoms United Methodist Church.
   Survivors include two sons, E. Beale Carter Jr. of Newsoms and Stuart Vries 
Carter of Wilmington, N.C.; three sisters, Zulie Worrell of Newsoms, Evelyn 
O'Berry of Suffolk and Clara Hancock of Sedley; a brother, Julian L. Carter of 
Newsoms; and five grandchildren.
