All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ HAYES AGNEW CROWDER Hayes Agnew Crowder, 58, of 603 Laurel Street, Franklin, died at the residence* on Sunday morning, June 29. He had been in ill health for some time but had continued to carry the mail from Seaboard morning and evening trains to the post office until a week or so prior to his last illness. Mr. Crowder was the husband of Mrs. Eva Mack Crowder and the son of the late Charlie Franklin and Mattie Simmons Crowder of this county. He was a member of the Newsoms Baptist Church and the Woodmen of the World. In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, Edward T. and Hayes A. Crowder, Jr., both of Newsoms; three daughters, Mrs. Susie C. Lowe of Hunterdale, Ms. Gladys C. Story of Newsoms, and Mrs. Mildred C. Parker of Carrsville; a brother, C.T. Crowder of Suffolk; two sisters, Mrs. Lula Pope and Carrsville and Mrs. Marion Purnell of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., four half- brothers, B.F. Harvey and Amon Porter, all of Newsoms, and Willie Porter of Roanoke Rapids; a half-sister, Mrs. Ernest Pettiway of Jarratt; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Crowder were conducted at 2:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon in the chapel of W.J.M. Holland & Sons by Rev. Louis F. Smith, pastor of Newsoms Baptist Church, and Rev. Donald E. Trump, pastor of Colosse Baptist Church. Interment was in Newsoms Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ernest Cogsdale, Johnny Cooke, James Porter, Linwood Simms, R.W. Tucker and John Worrell.
