All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ ISAAC LEE CARTER Isaac Lee Carter, 84, a well-known resident and retired merchant of Southampton and Isle of Wight counties, died Thursday night, October 19, at his home in Walters after an illness of a few days. Born in Gates County, N.C., on January 8, 1866, he was the son of the late Andrew and Frances Lee Carter. In May, 1885, he married Miss Rosa Eureka Lee, who preceded him in death in February, 1920. Moving to Southampton County in September, 1920, he became a merchant and remained in this business until about 15 years ago, when he retired because of his age. He was a member of the Black Creek Baptist Church. In December, 1921, he married Miss Bernice Griffin of Southampton County, who survives him. Other survivors are two daughters by his first wife, Mrs. W.C. Eure of Whaleyville and Mrs. S.C. Bristow of Franklin; one son by his surviving wife, Burnley Lee Carter of Walters; and ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and a niece. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Holland Funeral Home in Franklin by his pastor, Rev. J.C. Lanning, assisted by Rev. J. Sidney Cobb, pastor of the Great Fork Baptist Church. Burial was in the Griffin family cemetery near Franklin. Active pallbearers were L.E. Beale, C.C. Edwards, S.T. Spivey, R.W. Owen, Harry Hatfield, Jasper Carr, Stanley Lowe and Gilmer West.
