All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JOE FLETCHER CARTER Joe Fletcher Carter, a well-known young farmer of the Newsoms community, died at his home on November 19, age 39 years, after an illness of nine months. Mr. Carter was the son of the late Joseph Thomas Carter and Mrs. Marie Evelyn Carter, and had been a faithful member of Sunbeam Baptist Church since his early youth. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alice Thorp Carter and seven children, William, Joe Thorp, Edward, Franklin, Calvin, Charles and Julia; by his mother; five brothers, E.A. Carter of Cumberland, C.H., Va., Clyde H. Carter of Suffolk, E. Beale, H.B. and J.L. Carter Carter of Newsoms; five sisters, Mrs. W.H. Ansell of Portsmouth, Mrs. V.S. Culpeper and Mrs. B.L. O’berry of Suffolk, Mrs. H.J. Hancock of Sedley and Mrs. P.S. Worrell of Newsoms, besides a large family connection and many friends. The funeral services were conducted from the late home by his pastor, Rev. L.E. Dailey of Newsoms, assisted by Rev. R. Harrison Marks of the Newsoms M.E. Circuit, in the presence of a large assembly of sorrowing friends. Hymns sung included: "Sometime We’ll Understand," "Safe in the Arms of Jesus," and "The Christian’s Goodnight." The body bearers were: E.A., Clyde H., E. Beale and H.B. Carter, P.S. Worrell, H.J. Hancock, B.L. O’berry and J.L. Beale. The honorary bearers were: R.L. Barnes, D.C. Ricks, R.N. Beale, Dr. B.A. Pope, S.R. Vick, R.A. Bunn, C.C. Thorp, C.F. Whitfield, J.H. Stephenson and J.Q. Worrell.
