CORNWELL Gurney Smith Cornwell, 67, long-time resident of Southampton County until a few years ago, died suddenly in Emporia on Tuesday morning, December 18, after suffering a heart attack. Mr. Cornwell was the son of the late Alexander and Cora Bailey Cornwell. A retired employee of the Southern Johns-Manville Corporation of Jarratt, he was a member of Grace Memorial Methodist Church in Sedley. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Lois C. Draper of Richmond, Mrs. Lucy C. Marshall of Falls Church, and Mrs. Louise C. Martin of Severn, N.C.; one son, Gurney Smith Cornwell, Jr. of Courtland; one sister, Mrs. Lyda Pond of Richmond; two brothers, Ashley R. Cornwell of Norfolk and Leslie E. Cornwell of Sedley; and a number of nieces and nephews. The remains were removed to the funeral home in Franklin of W.J.M. Holland & Sons, and this (Thursday) afternoon were taken to Rosemont Cemetery, Sedley, for graveside services at 2 o'clock. Officiating were Revs. H.B. Owen of Glen Allen and C.A. McCormick, Jr., of Courtland.
