All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JOHN ROBERT CORNWELL John Robert Cornwell, 61, retired Franklin businessman, formerly of Portmouth, died Saturday, January 16, at 4:15 p.m. in Raiford Memorial Hospital, Franklin after an illness of several months. He formerly ran a restaurant in Franklin and prior to that had been in the painting business. A native of Catawba, S.C., he was a son of Richard and Mrs. Gertrude Cornwell. He was a member of the Baptist Church in Catawba. Besides his wife, Mrs. Madeline Brinkley Cornwell, surviving are four sons, Robert R. Cornwell and Richard E. Cornwell, both of Portsmouth; John R. Cornwell, Jr., of Franklin and Alton B. Cornwell of Reno, Nev.; one daughter, Mrs. Shirley Stainback of Franklin; nine grandchildren; one brother, Ward Beech Cornwell of Rock Hill, S.C., and two sisters, Mrs. C.S. Hunsucker of Rock Hill, S.C., and Mrs. Madge Stanley of Rockingham, N.C. Funeral services were held at Snellings Funeral Home, Portsmouth, Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. by the Rev. Ira Hudgins, pastor of Franklin Baptist Church, and the Rev. Glenn Weaver, pastor of West Side Christian Church. Pallbearers were S. Clifton Finley, Herbert L. Bryant, S.L. Maddrey, Elmer E. Hall, W.C. Edwards and P.L. Lipscomb. Burial was in Olive Branch Cemetery.
