DAVIS News was received shortly before press time of the death in McGuire Hospital, Richmond, of Charles W. Davis of Courtland. Mr. Davis, a veteran of World War 1, had been in ill health for several years. His death occurred this (Thursday) morning at 3 o'clock. Born near what is now Sedley, Mr. Davis studied law at the University of Virginia. Prior to World War 1, he practiced for a while in Norfolk, being associated with the late John N. Sebrell, Jr. After the war he located in Courtland, and was for several years judge of the trial justice's court. He was popular with his colleagues in the legal fraternity and with the public generally. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mabel Wachsmuth Davis, and a son, Charles W. Davis, Jr. His body will be brought to the funeral home of W.J.M. Holland & Sons. Funeral arrangements have not been announced. RETIRED JURIST BURIED SATURDAY Funeral services for Charles Woodard Davis, 78, of Courtland, who died in McGuire Veterans Hospital, Richmond, early Thursday morning, May 2, were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Black Creek Friends Meetinghouse, Sedley, by his cousin, Rev. Harry A. Wellons of Victoria, assisted by Rev. R.L. Bailey, pastor of the Courtland Baptist Church, and Rev. C.A. McCormick, Jr., pastor of the Courtland Methodist Church. Burial with Masonic rites was in Rosemont Cemetery, Sedley, the active pallbearers being Judge John K. Hutton, J. Vaughan Beale, John M. Britt, Dr. W. Frank Daughtrey, Jr., Mills E. Godwin, J. Edward Moyler, Samuel E. Pope and Richard E. Railey. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Courtland Methodist Men's Bible class. A native of the Sedley community, Mr. Davis was the son of William Thomas Davis and Eugenia Butler Davis of Southampton County and the husband of Mrs. Mabel Wachsmuth Davis of Courtland. He had been in ill health for the past three years. After graduating from Gilford College he attended Haverford College, Haverford, Pa., following which he taught for several years in the Oak Grove Academy in Maine and Pacific College in Forest Grove, Ore. He then studied law at the University of Virginia, from which he received his degree in 1912. Thereafter he practiced law in Norfolk until the United States entered World War 1, during which he served in the Army, attaining the rank of Captain. He began the practice of law in Courtland in 1919. From 1928 to 1932 he was a member of the House of Delegates from Southampton County. In 1934 he was appointed judge of the county's trial justice court, a position he held until 1954, when failing health forced his retirement. He was a member of the Black Creek Friends Meeting; Franklin Lodge No. 51, Knights of Pythias; Courtland Masonic Lodge No. 85, of which he was a past master; the American Legion, the Southampton County Bar Association, and Virginia Bar Association. He was a charter member of the Courtland Ruritan Club, Boy Scout committeeman of the Old Dominion Area Council, and teacher of the Charles W. Davis Bible Class in the Courtland Methodist Sunday School for more than 30 years. Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Charles William Davis, USAF, stationed in Germany; four sisters, Mrs. J.J. Baker and Mrs. R.B. Hancock of Newport News, Mrs. T.J. Jarratt of Jarratt, and Mrs. Patricia Raiford of Richmond; and nieces and nephews.
