Davis died at his home near Courtland Monday after an illness extending over a period of several years. Mr. Davis was the son of the late L.W. Davis, well-known citizen of the Courtland community, and is survived by his wife; by three sons, William Davis of Norfolk, Garland and Gillette Davis of Courtland; by five daughters, Miss Jane Davis who teaches in Clifton Forge, Mrs. I.P. Gilbert and Misses Virginia, Anna Newton and Betty Davis of Courtland; four brothers, J. Ben, Frank L., Emmett R., and Paul B. Davis, and two sisters, Mrs. E. Whitfield and Mrs. Ida Williams, all of Courtland, besides a large number of other relatives throughout the county. Mr. Davis was in his 54th year, and before a paralytic stroke sustained about four years ago, was an active farmer and one of the most enthusiastic sportsmen of Southampton, a famous deer hunter and a member of the Davis Hunt Club of the Courtland community for many years, the members of that organization acting as honorary pallbearers. He was a member of the Courtland M.E. Church, and funeral services were held from his home Tuesday afternoon by his Pastor, Rev. H.F. Turner, assisted by Rev. Gordon L. Price. Interment was made in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland, the active pallbearers being: James T., Lewis and Cecil Gillette, H.D. Babb, Herbert Yates, Dr. B.A. Pope, Lewis Davis and Davis Magette.
