All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JOHN DAUGHTRY DAVIS John Daughtry Davis, highly esteemed resident of Sedley, died at his home Tuesday, May 2, after an illness of two weeks. He was a native of Southampton County, born near Sedley April 14, 1852. Mr. Davis was known and admired by his friends and neighbors as an exemplary Christian character, a man of high honor and integrity, numbering a host of friends. He united with Black Creek Church in young manhood, later transferring his membership to Sedley Baptist Church. He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Nettie Camp, and from this union he is survived by the following children and grandchildren; J.E. and E.P Davis of Norfolk, Mrs. W.C. Andrews of Zuni, Mrs. W.L. Johnson of Sedley, Mrs. H.C. Justice of Norfolk and Miss Sallie Davis of New York City; grandchildren, Clinton Davis, Leo, Billy and Russell Andrews, Annie Davis and Willard Johnson. He is also survived by his second wife who was Miss Arean Drake. Mr. Davis was one of the oldest citizens of the village, both in age and in the standpoint of residence, and his familiar form will be greatly missed. Funeral services were conducted from his late home Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock by his Pastor, Rev. Rives Ferguson and Rev. J.A. Stanfield, and interment was made in the Camp family cemetery. Pallbearers were: N.W. Wills, G.S. Cornwell, J.H. Boyd, J.C. Bradshaw, T.F. Hundley, L.L. Bradshaw, K.G. Howell, and H.C. Johnson. Friends of the family served as honorary pallbearers.
