Mr. Jesse McClenny, who was in bathing at the same time, made heroic efforts to save her but became exhausted and was rescued by Mr. S. Lloyd Drake who heard the cry for help. The body of Miss Davis was washed ashore a few minutes later and all efforts were made to restore her but to no avail. The deceased, who was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.W. Davis of the Black Creek community, was born February 11, 1894 and died July 28, 1919. She was educated in the public schools of the county and Harrisonburg Normal, Harrisonburg, Va., and then taught in the public school at Joyners, the high school at Carson and was principal of the Somerton Graded School. Since June 1918, she has been in the service of the Government at Washington, D.C., holding a responsible position in the Bond Department. Although her work took her from home she always felt a deep interest in her church and community. Since early childhood she had been a faithful member of Black Creek Baptist church from which place the funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon by the pastor, Rev. W.P. Brooke. The solo, "He Knowns it All," by Miss Elmina Rawls of Franklin and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Nearer My God to Thee" by the choir, were all very touchingly rendered. She was laid to rest in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery at Franklin. The high esteem in which she was held was attested by the many beautiful floral designs. Besides her parents, she leaves to mourn their loss five sisters; Misses Gypsey and Lenora Davis of Franklin, Miss Maude Davis of Henderson, N.C., Mrs. Irene Barkley and Mrs. Jesse McClenny of Franklin. The following gentleman acted as pallbearers; honorary, M.G. McClenny, J.W. Turner, J.K. Wade, J.J. Camp, Dr. B.F. Babb, J.F. Bradshaw, Rosser Bulls, B.F. Babb, Rufus Johnson, R.E. Beale, E.A.
