Davis of Southampton county and was born August 9. 1855. Mr. Davis spent the greater part of his life in Southampton and on November 5, 1885, was married to Martha C. Williams of that county. Their union was blessed with six children, five of whom survive him to mourn their great loss. One daughter was drowned and preceded him to the great beyond July 28. 1919.* Sam Davis was a good neighbor, a staunch believer in the Savior, a fond and devoted father and a loyal husband, and was for many years a member of the Christian church. His health had been failing for some time from chronic Bright's disease and when he could no longer carry on his work he sold his farms and moved to Suffolk, January 1920, and there spent his remaining days. We feel that in the death of such a man the community has sustained a great loss; his many friends a disaster; and his family a calamity. His body was taken to Franklin, Va., for burial in Poplar Spring cemetery at 2:30 Sunday p.m. The burial service was conducted by Dr. C.H. Rowland of the Franklin Christian Church. "Rock of Ages" and "Abide With Me" were beautifully rendered by the Christian church choir. The active pallbearers were W.R. Sheffield, E.N. Johnson, C.L. Grizzard, R.L. Hancock. M.G. McClenny, John R. Councill, J.K. Wade and Sam Drewry; honorary, W.E. Darden, H.B. McLemore, Ben E. Bradshaw, Alfred Cobb, E.A. Councill, C.T. Saunders, J. Tom Butler, W.M. Bradshaw, T.A. Saunders, J.H. Boyd, Leland Beale and Timothy E. Johnson. He leaves a wife and five daughters, Miss Gypsey L. Davis, Franklin, Mrs. W.P. Johnson, Ivor, Mrs. Irene A. Barkley, Suffolk, Miss Maude C. Davis, Henderson, N.C., and Mrs. J.F. McClenny, Franklin, and one brother, Mr. J.D. Davis, Sedley, besides a host of nieces and nephews to mourn his departure. They weep not as those without hope, for their loss is his eternal gain. "Sleep on beloved, sleep and take thy rest".
