Davis of Courtland and well-known citizen of this county for many years, died March 10 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Thos. F. Jarratt in Jarratt, with whom he had made his home since the death of Mrs. Davis in 1926. Mr. Davis was born at the old homestead near Vicksville, this county, November 11, 1849, the son of the late Littleton Davis and Mrs. Louisa Wills Davis. On February 2, 1877, he married Miss Eugenia Butler of this county who died ten years ago, and for approximately half a century they lived at Sedley where they were highly-esteemed citizens and raised an interesting family of two sons and four daughters: Dr. J. Littleton Davis of Roanoke, Charles W. Davis of Courtland, Mrs. E.F. Jarratt of Jarratt, Mrs. R.W. Raiford of Richmond, Mrs. J.J. Baker and Mrs. Berkley Hancock of Newport News. Mr. Davis is also survived by 12 grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. William Wellons and Mrs. Betty Barnes of Sedley. Both Mr. and Mrs. Davis were originally members of Johnson’s Grove Christian Church, but about 40 years ago they moved their membership to the Black Creek Friends Church, now the Sedley Friends Church. Mr. Davis was a man of sterling Christian character and leaves a wide circle of friends. Funeral services at 3 o’clock in the family plot at Rosemont Cemetery, Sedley, by the Rev. Jesse Stanfield, pastor of the deceased, assisted by Rev. Alonzo Cloud, Rev. Floyd P. Davis and Rev. A. W. Roten of Courtland. The pallbearers were his sons, sons-in-law and two grandsons, J.J. Baker, Jr., and Robert Baker of Newport News.
