DE BORDENAVE PROMINENT PHYSICIAN POSTMASTER, CITIZEN Dr. E.A. DeBordenave died early Monday morning at Raiford Hospital where he had been for treatment about three weeks. He was 62 years of age, and had been in ill health since sustaining at stroke of paralysis last Fall. He was apparently much improved until the distressing and sudden death of his wife, Mrs. Jessie Fetter DeBordenave, who died March 13, 1936, after an illness of less than one week, and since that time he had been steadily losing ground. Ernest Auguste De Bordenave was born April 17, 1874, the son of the late Major Fulgence DeBordenave and Mrs. Mattie Pipkin DeBordenave, well-known and prominent citizens of our town. His father was a native of Pau, France, and had emigrated to Louisana only a few years before the War Between the States. Joining the famous Louisiana Zouaves, he fought gallantly for the Confederacy throughout that conflict and after the surrender at Appomattox settled in Southampton County, his wife being a native of Murfreesboro, N.C. Attending the private academy for boys at Windsor, Va., conducted by the Rev. Joseph F. Deans, Dr. DeBordenave later attended the Medical College of Virginia where he received his degree in medicine, and began to practice here about 1899. As a physician he was kindly, sympathetic, untiring, devoted to the interest of his patients and a great favorite with all children. Congenial and affable in temperament, he numbered a wide circle of friends. He was a consistent communicant of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and a member of it vestry, a charter member of the Franklin Rotary Club, and a leader in his party, having been a former Republican Chairman for Southampton County. Succeeding his father, who died in 1904, as Franklin postmaster, he had held the office under practically all Republican administrations since that time. He was an interested and active member of the Medical Society of Virginia, the Southside Medical Association and the Southampton Medical Society. In January, 1906, he married Miss Jessie Fetter, daughter of the late Rev. Frederick A. Fetter, then Rector of Emmanuel Church here. He is survived by a son, Ernest DeBordenave, Jr., a senior at the Virginia Episcopal Seminary, Alexandria; a daughter, Miss Jess DeBordenave, a member of the Boykins High School faculty; a brother, Livius De Bordenave of Philadelphia, and many friends. Funeral services were conducted from Emmanuel Episcopal Church Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock by his son, Ernest DeBordenave, Jr., a divinity student, soon to receive his orders as Deacon, the young man having read the rites of the church for his mother less than a month ago. He was assisted in the service by the Rev. Norman E. Taylor of Norfolk, minister-in-charge of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, and by Jesse Trotter, a fellow student at the Virginia Episcopal Seminary. There was a large assemblage of friends in attendance, and the floral tributes were beautiful. The pallbearers were: Doctors R.H. Cobb, Joel C. Rawls, Ashley Cutchin, P.P. Causey, and E.F. Reese of the county medical faculty, Dr. T. Sanford Cooke of Portsmouth, Dr. P.D. Camp of Richmond, and Morgan Raiford. Burial was made in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery.
