Duke, widow of the late Richard Duke of Nansemond County, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.R. Byrd in First Avenue, Tuesday morning, February 14. Mrs. Duke was probably the oldest person in the county, being between 97 and 100 years old, and was twice married. The first marriage taking place in 1857* to Thomas Parker of Nansemond County, who fought through the War of 1812. Mrs. Duke is survived by one child, Mrs. J.R. Byrd, 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock from the home of Mrs. Byrd, the body bearers being grandsons of the deceased, C.O., S.E., R.E., W.C. and Alfred Byrd, Thomas Parker and Harvey Darden. Interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Susannah M. (HOWELL PARKER; Mrs. Richard R.)
