All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JOSEPH LEE DOUGHTIE Joseph Lee Doughtie, age 78, well known farmer and merchant of the Black Creek community, died early Wednesday morning December 23, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Hoen Edwards of Black Creek after an illness of [...*] months. He was the son of Jesse J. and Mary E. Wiggins Doughtie of Hertford County, N.C. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lillian Modlin Doughtie of Franklin, one daughter, Mrs. Hoen Edwards of Zuni, one grandson, Hoen Edwards, Jr., also of Zuni, one half-sister, Mrs. Emma Barnes of Virginia Beach, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted from the Holland Funeral Home chapel on Saturday, December 26, at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. A.W. Coates and Rev. R.D. Stephenson officiated. Interment was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Pallbearers were [...*] Eley, C.C. Vaughan, III, J. Edward Moyler, W.T. Pace, Jr., L.H. Babb, Dr. E.M. Babb, Crawley C. Edwards and Leland Beale. Honorary pallbearers were the Men’s bible Class of Black Creek Baptist Church and Charlie Scott. ****************************************************************************** In the death of Joseph Lee Doughtie, a retired farmer and merchant, at the home of his daughter in the Black Creek community on Wednesday, December 23, his family is bereaved of a loving and indulgent husband and father; his church, of a faithful and loyal member, his friends, of aperson who had spent a long and useful life. His death came after an illness of many months. Mr. Doughtie was a native of Hertford County, N.C., and was born on June 16, 1875, spending his boyhood days near Harrellsville, N.C. On December 31, 1901, he married Miss Lillie Nora Modlin of Hertford County, the two spending fifty-two years of happy wedded life together. [...*] of the well-known Pruden plantation in Hertford County, N.C., which position he held until he moved to Southampton County in 1913. At this time he moved to the well-known Bowers plantation. Early upon arrival, he joined Black Creek Baptist Church and was active member of the Men’s Bible Class. He was affiliated with the W.O.W. and at one time served his district well as a member of the Board of Supervisors. On December 31, 1952, Mr. and Mrs. Doughtie celeberated their Golden Wedding anniversary at the old Bowers plantation and received around 200 of their friends and relatives. Besides his widow, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Hoen Edwards, a grandson, Hoen M. Edwards, Jr., and a half-sister, Mrs. Raleigh Barnes, of Virginia Beach. Funeral services for Mr. Doughtie were conducted in the chapel of W.J.M. Holland Sons Funeral Home at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, December 26th. Interment was in Poplar Spring Cemetery.
