All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ FORMER TEACHER MISS DAUGHTREY DIES AT AGE 86 Miss Mary Virginia Daughtrey, a former science teacher in the city of Richmond and Southampton County public school systems, died yesterday at a local hospital, after a lengthy illness. Miss Daughtrey, who was 86, was a Richmond resident. She taught at John Marshall High School in Richmond from 1930 until 1948 and from 1959 until 1964. She taught in the Southampton County public schools until 1965. "I remember her as a very dedicated teacher," said former John Marshall student Carlyle Tiller. "She was determined that students in her class would learn something. Miss Daughtrey was a native of Southampton County. She received a bachelor's degree in biology from Westhampton College in 1924, and later did graduate work at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She was a member of Sunbeam Baptist Church in Southampton County. There are no immediate survivors. A graveside service will be held Monday at 4 p.m. in Poplar Spring Cemetery in Franklin. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Westhampton Alumni Fund of Sunbeam Baptist Church. ****************************************************************************** VETERAN TEACHER DIES Longtime teacher Mary Virginia Daughtrey died Thursday at a local hospital. Miss Daughtrey, 86, had taught science at John Marshall High School. She also had taught in the South Hampton Public School System. She taught in Richmond from 1930 to 1948 and again from 1959 until 1964. A native of Southampton County, Miss Daughtrey commuted between Richmond and her home county during her teaching career. She graduated from Westhampton College in 1924 with a B.S. in biology. She lived the last several years of her life in a nursing home in Richmond. Miss Daughtrey was also a member of Sunbeam Baptist Church in Southampton. Survivors include a niece, Helen Binford Land of Maitland, Fla., and a nephew, William H. Daughtrey Jr. of Richmond. A graveside funeral service will be held June 12 at 4 p.m. in Poplar Spring Cemetery in Franklin. Donations may be made to the Westhampton Alumni Fund or Sunbeam Baptist Church.
