All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ CHARLES WALTER DICKENS Charles Walter Dickens, 70, a lifelong resident of Southampton County, died Tuesday morning at his home near Courtland after an illness of several weeks. He was the son of the late Jesse and Sallie Bowles Dickens of North Carolina. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laura A. Dickens; a daughter, Mrs. F.L. Marks; a son, Claude S. Dickens, both of Courtland, and a sister, Mrs. Rosa M. Hill of Capron. Services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock from the residence by the Rev. W.W. Beasley of Courtland, assisted by the Rev. W.A. Edwards of Courtland. The hymn "In the Sweet Bye and Bye" was sung by the choir and Mrs. C.W. Parker and Mrs. T.P. Gilbert sang "Does Jesus Care?" Pallbearers were J.J. Dickens, John Hill, Ashton Applewhite, Thomas Vaughan, E.R. Davis, D.C. Gillette, George Vargo, Emmett Babb and J.E. Whitfield. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland.
